What is the 11+?
The 11+ is an entrance exam used by grammar schools and some selective independent schools to decide which children are offered a place in Year 7. It’s typically taken at the start of Year 6 when your child is around 10 or 11 years old—hence the name “11+”.
The test is designed to identify academic ability and potential. It usually covers a mix of subjects such as English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The exact format and content can vary depending on where you live and which schools you’re applying to.
Why does it matter?
Grammar schools are state-funded but offer an academically focused education, often with strong results and a traditional curriculum. Gaining a place is competitive, and the 11+ is the gateway. Doing well can open doors to high-performing schools without the cost of private education.
Is it right for my child?
The 11+ isn’t about knowing every answer—it’s about showing potential. If your child enjoys learning, picks up new ideas quickly, or responds well to challenges, the 11+ could be a great fit. Preparation can make a big difference, even for bright students.

Start early with confidence-building activities. Focus on reading widely, exploring vocabulary, and strengthening maths basics. Introduce reasoning skills through fun logic games or puzzles. Use short, consistent study sessions to develop a routine — especially in Year 4 and early Year 5.
Many families begin with daily 11+ practice to build early confidence. KSOL Courses include tailored daily tests designed to fit easily into your child’s weekly schedule.
Get familiar with the 11+ question styles and timing. Begin working with Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning formats used in GL Assessment exams. Gradually increase question difficulty and reduce time limits to simulate exam pressure. Review incorrect answers carefully — understanding mistakes is key to improvement.
KSOL’s online system adapts to your child’s strengths and weaknesses, helping them build accuracy and speed over time.
Test progress in realistic conditions. Sit full-length mock exams under timed conditions in a test centre or at home. Use feedback to fine-tune revision strategies and boost confidence before the real exam. Focus final preparation on target areas, not just general revision.
KSOL’s mock exams mirror the GL 11+ format and give you an indication of where your child stands.
Prepare with structure and confidence. Our recommended 11+ courses help children strengthen core skills in Maths, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning — all aligned with the Birmingham GL Assessment format.
Whether your child is starting early or needs targeted revision, structured tuition can make a real difference. Learn about the course types, what to expect, and how each option supports long-term progress.
